Border Between Mexico and Belize
The border between Mexico and Belize holds significant prominence among travellers seeking to explore Central America in a welcoming and amicable manner. This border is located in the Chetumal city of Quintana Roo, Mexico, and the Santa Marta city in the Cayo District of Belize. Spanning a length of 250 kilometres, it serves as a pivotal point for those venturing between the two nations.
In addition to being a border city, Chetumal boasts an airport offering flights to various destinations within Central America. However, overland border crossings are the ideal choice for those inclined towards budget-friendly travel. During my visit in December 2023, the border crossing was operational, underscoring the importance of verifying its status before making any travel plans. I recommend ensuring the border is open before embarking on your journey.
Carry Cash
During my travels to Central America, I adopted a crucial principle: always carry cash. This is particularly important because many people in various parts of the world, including Central America, do not rely on digital transactions, and the economies in this region predominantly operate on a cash basis.
In my pre-trip research, I found several articles emphasizing the necessity of allocating 35$ for tourist fees upon crossing the Mexico border. However, in my personal experience, I haven’t encountered any such expense. Instead, I presented my flight ticket to an immigration officer, and the tourism fees were seamlessly included. According to local law, fees are only applicable when entering Mexico via a land border. These tourism fees are automatically integrated into the ticket price for flights arriving in Mexico.
It’s crucial to note that failing to display the tourism tax included in your ticket upon arrival may result in additional charges. I encountered a fellow traveller who flew in from Germany. Unfortunately, her air ticket did not specify any tourism fees or taxes, leading to unexpected expenses upon arrival. Therefore, it’s advisable to plan accordingly and ensure that your ticket includes tourism fees to avoid unforeseen payments.
Border Crossing By Rental Car
Regarding comfort and convenience, rental cars stand out as a top choice. Having your vehicle provides unparalleled control over your schedule and timing. While exploring the Yucatan province, I opted for a rental car to maximize my limited time in Mexico. Upon acquiring the car at Cancun airport, I inquired about the feasibility of extending my travels to Belize City.
However, land border crossings between Mexico and Belize offer limited options. While certain rental car agencies, like Enterprises, provide this service, it involves paying border transfer fees and necessitates returning the car to Mexico. To secure a rental car, the following documents are mandatory:
- Driver’s License
- Car papers
- Insurance papers (while basic insurance is typically included, I strongly recommend opting for full coverage to mitigate risks on unfamiliar roads in another country)
- Additionally, it’s essential to present return tickets.
- Hotel booking or any other evidence validating your accommodation arrangements
A valuable advice is to refrain from booking a car online from your home country. Local options, whether obtained locally or at the airport, often present more competitive prices, and there’s room for negotiation. This approach not only offers better affordability but also allows for greater flexibility in selecting the most suitable rental option for your journey.
Border Crossing By Bus
Travelling across the border by bus offers a smoother experience with fewer hassles. Purchase a ticket, and you’re good to go until you reach Belize City. The ADO bus services are renowned for their daily route from Cancun to Belize City. Reserving tickets online is an option, though occasional website issues may arise. Alternatively, you can conveniently purchase tickets at bus counters. I obtained mine at the Tulum ADO Bus Terminal. The cost for a one-way ticket is approximately $55.
Border Crossing By Taxi
Here is another option that falls within a moderate price range. The taxi fare is fixed, and although it ranges from $150 to $200, it becomes a more favourable choice when travelling with a group of 3-4 people. Some shuttle services drop you off at the Chetumal side border, where you can seamlessly transition to another shuttle after completing the migration process.
These three options cover the main avenues for border crossing. I found the bus option to be both economical and hassle-free, but it does require careful planning. If you opt for a taxi or shuttle, avoiding border crossings at night is advisable. If you’ve made it this far in reading, I appreciate your time and would love to hear about your border-crossing experience.

In conclusion, the Mexico-Belize border presents a gateway to a vibrant tapestry of experiences, seamlessly blending the allure of Central America with the rich cultural tapestries of Mexico and Belize. Whether you choose the flexibility of a rental car, the convenience of a bus journey, or the comfort of a taxi ride, each mode of transportation contributes to the unique narrative of your cross-border adventure.
