Embarking on a captivating week-long expedition through the vibrant landscapes of Mexico and Guatemala, my journey encountered unexpected twists at the Belize-Guatemala border, adding an extra layer of excitement to my adventurous pursuit. Driven by curiosity, I aimed to conquer the formidable Acatenango, immersing myself in a realm of hidden treasures.
Guatemala City’s Historical Splendor
Guatemala City, the pulsating heart of my exploration, graciously unveiled its historical marvels. The National Palace of Culture welcomed me with grandeur, echoing the rich tapestry of the country’s past. The towering Metropolitan Cathedral further enriched the city’s narrative, setting the stage for the mysteries that awaited me.
Antigua: History and Charm
My path gracefully led me to Antigua, a town pulsating with history and charm. After a well-deserved rest day at Hostel Maya Papaya (which deserves a special mention for its delightful atmosphere and friendly hosts), I delved into the enchanting Lake Atitlan, cradled amidst volcanic peaks. The serene beauty and vibrant villages surrounding the lake showcased Guatemala’s natural wonders. A tour through three lakeside villages provided insights into Mayan civilization, with locals crafting clothes using natural dyes, adding a cultural dimension. A delightful chocolate tour offered a sweet taste of Guatemala’s essence.
Pacaya’s Fiery Slopes: A Thrilling Edge
Ascending the fiery slopes of Volcano Pacaya the next day brought a thrilling edge to my adventure. The rugged terrain and volcanic landscapes presented a striking contrast to the architectural wonders I had encountered earlier. While the hike was moderately challenging, it set the stage for the pinnacle of my odyssey—the ascent of Acatenango.
Acatenango’s Summit: A Triumph of Determination
Embarking on the arduous hike, the landscape unfolded, revealing panoramic views of neighbouring volcanoes and the region’s breathtaking beauty. Conquering Acatenango’s summit was an indescribable reward, a testament to my adventurous spirit and unwavering determination.

It’s worth mentioning that due to my inadequate planning, I missed exploring the ruins of Tikal and Chemukh Chape.
