Ah, the joys of travelling! It’s like trying to solve a puzzle with a map and a handful of vacation days. I’ve always found it to be a bit of a head-scratcher, a real brain teaser. I mean, who has the time to sit down and meticulously plan every time of their trip? Not me, that’s for sure.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that my lack of planning skills has gotten me into a fair bit of trouble. Missed flights, wrong turns, you name it- I’ve personally experienced it. They say you learn from your mistakes, right? So here I am, folks, ready to share my newfound wisdom. So buckle up and grab your sunscreen because I will explain the Costa Rica travel itinerary.

Costa Rica

Let’s delve into one of my favourite topics: geography. Regarding a harmonious blend of safety, eco-tourism, and laid-back holiday destinations, Costa Rica reigns supreme in Central America. Situated to the north of Nicaragua and the south of Panama, it is hugged by the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the tranquil waters of the Pacific Ocean to the west. Despite its small size, spanning just 51,100 square kilometres—a mere 0.03% of the Earth’s surface—Costa Rica boasts an astonishing 5% of the planet’s biodiversity. Remarkably, a quarter of its territory is dedicated to protected areas, ensuring the preservation of its rich wildlife.

Nestled between the two coastlines lie majestic mountains, with the towering Cerro Chirripó at an impressive 3,820 meters, claiming the title of the country’s highest peak. This juxtaposition of lush coastal regions and lofty peaks makes Costa Rica an unparalleled destination for travellers seeking diverse experiences.

Exploring Costa Rica thoroughly in 14 days would be impractical and unfair to its rich offerings. However, I highly recommend prioritizing visits to the following destinations:

  1. San Jose
  2. La Fortuna
  3. Jaco
  4. Uvita
  5. San Gerardo De Rivas
  6. Puerto Viejo

These locales offer diverse experiences and adventures, ensuring an unforgettable journey through Costa Rica. Below are some activities to indulge in while visiting this remarkable country.

Option 1: Costa Rica travel itinerary

Days 1-2: San Jose: Arrive at San Jose International Airport:

Costa Rica’s capital city shares similarities with its counterparts in other Central American nations. While it may not boast a plethora of activities, it appeals to those with an appreciation for history and a desire to immerse themselves in local culture. Upon arrival, visitors can explore the city’s rich heritage by visiting iconic landmarks such as the National Museum and the Metropolitan Cathedral. In the evening, a stroll through the vibrant Mercado Central offers an opportunity to savour authentic local flavours.

For the adventurous traveller, the second day presents an ideal opportunity to venture beyond the city limits. A day trip to nearby attractions such as the majestic Poas Volcano or the serene La Paz Waterfall Gardens promises unforgettable experiences amidst Costa Rica’s natural wonders.

Day 3-5: La Fortuna:

Experience the awe-inspiring splendour of Arenal Volcano. Spend your day immersed in the breathtaking scenery as you hike through its verdant trails, surrounded by lush greenery. Discover the therapeutic allure of numerous hot springs, ranging from free natural springs to those requiring admission fees. Alternatively, indulge in the convenience of a guided day trip to Arenal Volcano for a comprehensive exploration.

For a captivating adventure, venture to Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges. Encounter diverse wildlife, traverse the suspended bridges, and behold the panoramic vistas of Arenal Volcano. En route, seize the opportunity to unwind at a secluded spot featuring complimentary hot springs, adding an extra layer of relaxation to your journey. Engage in thrilling adventure pursuits such as zip-lining and white water rafting.

Day 6-8: Jaco:

Following exhilarating hiking escapades, Jaco emerges as the ultimate destination to unwind amidst its stunning beaches and ride the waves with invigorating surfing lessons. Embark on a memorable boat tour at Playa Herradura to encounter diverse marine wildlife in their natural habitat. Renowned for its lively nightlife and delectable cuisine, Jaco offers a vibrant fusion of entertainment and culinary delights.

Day 9-10: Uvita:

Explore the breathtaking shores of Marino Ballena National Park, where pristine beaches await your discovery. Embark on a memorable journey of whale watching or snorkelling to immerse yourself in the vibrant tapestry of marine life that inhabits these crystal-clear waters. Take time to rejuvenate amidst the tranquil embrace of the park’s natural surroundings, allowing yourself to unwind and reconnect with the beauty of the world around you.

Day 11-14: San Gerardo De Rivas:

For enthusiasts of adventure and hiking lovers, the Cerro Chirripó trek is an unmissable experience. With three distinct routes, the route via San Gerardo De Rivas stands out as a favourite among adventurers. As the highest peak in Costa Rica, Cerro Chirripó offers awe-inspiring panoramic views, with lucky hikers treated to glimpses of the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean from its summit. After immersing yourself in this unforgettable journey, on the 14th day, you can return to San Jose in preparation for your return flight.

Option 2: Adventure & Nature Expedition Itinerary

Puerto Viejo:

Opting to skip Uvita and explore Puerto Viejo offers a more immersive experience of Costa Rica. Nestled on the Caribbean side, Puerto Viejo exudes a laid-back charm that beckons exploration. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere as you soak up the Caribbean vibes. Embark on snorkelling or diving expeditions to discover the mesmerizing coral reefs of Cahuita National Park. Delve into the vibrant tapestry of indigenous cultures and traditions that flourish within the region, enriching your journey with depth and authenticity.
